Course Summary

In our Five Day Film school students form production teams and get to write, shoot, direct, act in and edit their very own films.

Students will learn the fundamentals of making a film from start to finish in this creative team building adventure. Conceiving a film in their groups and receiving feedback throughout the week, participants learn to work as a production team and to craft their movie.

Taught through fun film making games, exercises and challenges, the course also explores successful short movies as samples to learn from. Students will develop core film making skills in a fun environment, as well as explore team working, creativity, leadership, writing, camera work, editing and more!

With expert tuition throughout, each young learner will also get the opportunity to edit their film on professional iMacs, ready for viewing at the end of the week!

What we cover

• Film history: An introduction

• The Key Story Ingredients: How to come up with ideas for short movies.

• Basic onset roles and icebreaker games: Fun warm up games to encourage teamwork, build confidence and introduce you to the roles on set.

• Shot composition: How to make your image look nice and frame it well.

• Camera angles: Learn different types of angle and how to use them in your story.

• How to cover a scene: Learn how to shoot a scene including the main shots, 180-degree rule & pickups.

• Camera movement: Explore basic camera movements including: handheld, tilting, panning, craning and low budget dolly.

• Story structure: How to make scripts that grab your audience.

• How to storyboard a movie

• Acting for screen: Learn the basics of acting on screen.

• Directing + producing + creativity tips

• Editing: How to edit your movie including edit principles, transitions, story structure etc.

• Light reflection! Illuminate your shots nicely using light reflectors.

• Some props and costume accessories (students to bring their own costume)

• End of week screening: watch your movies at the end of the course

• Available and adapted accordingly to suit all of the following age ranges: 9-11, 12-15, 16-18, 18+. (We can also tailor it to suit a wider age range if required)
